HOUSTON'S FIRST SOUTHERN LIVING

SHOWCASE HOME TO OPEN IN MAY

---

Tours to Benefit Local Literacy Programs

Houston, TX (March 27, 2012) — Southern hospitality comes home to Houston when Stone Acorn Builders debuts the city’s first Southern Living Showcase Home, opening Friday, May 4 from noon to 6 p.m.  The home will be open for tours on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am until 6pm the weekends of May 5-6, 12-13 and 19-20.   More than 5,000 attendees are expected to tour the gracious new address. Proceeds from the $10 admission price benefits literacy programs of Friends of the Bellaire Library and Houston Center for Literacy.

Located at 5307 Aspen in Bellaire, the 4,777-square-foot home marries regional charm with design ingenuity in its four bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms, chef’s kitchen, library and craft room, study, mudroom, gardening stand, and outdoor living rooms. The home is designed by JKM Designs with interior design by Edwina Alexis Interiors.

Southern style adorns the home's interior and exterior with details such as intricate trim work, reclaimed brick finishes, window shutters, deep front and rear porches, and even a barn door between the kitchen and mudroom.  Natural light is one of the home's best features, illuminating cozy reading nooks and window benches throughout the home.

The open floor plan is generous and inviting with classic nuances that make this house a Southern beauty from the minute you step inside the door.  Walnut floors and knotty alder doors add warmth to the high wainscoted walls and regal 11-foot ceilings topped by triple crown molding.

The kitchen is a family haven with vintage enamel Viking appliances, farmhouse sink, pot filler and expansive marble & granite counter work spaces. A lower counter invites kids to help stir the pot or bring their homework to the kitchen.  The full working pantry warms the heart with a herringbone-laid reclaimed brick floor, marble and granite counters and custom art glass doors.   The adjoining mudroom adds a touch of authenticity with its barn door kitchen entry and Dutch door exit.  Morning light streams into the kitchen's adjacent built-in breakfast area, and the tongue and groove crossbeam ceiling caps the room's comfortable ambience.

The downstairs flows spaciously from family room, study and formal dining room to library.  The rooms make stunning use of high block wainscot, tall ceilings with triple crown molding and elegant built-in shelving.  The library is a tranquil escape for both serious study and relaxation with its rolling ladder and reading bench.

French doors off the family room transition living to the outdoors and onto a deep back porch floored in reclaimed brick.  The porch is fashioned with a griller’s summer kitchen and overlooks a lavish cook’s garden with an antique tub, circular herb garden, raised vegetable beds and rain barrel collection station.  Southern-style porches wrap the front and back of the home as well as a second-story balcony, where traditional wooden rockers and ceiling fans beckon you to bask in an evening breeze.

The home’s privacy and personality continue upstairs with a master suite plus three more spacious bedrooms, a comfortable laundry room with extensive storage, a large linen closet and gift wrapping center.  Built-ins are incorporated into every room with special attention to the children's bedrooms with window reading benches, bookshelves and display cabinets to show off trophies and prized collectibles.

The entrance into the master suite includes an art alcove, a serene mood-setter for the most intimate area of the home.  The suite offers a palatial bathroom in neutral tones with his and her sinks, a Victoria + Albert freestanding tub and a spa shower.   The sweeping walk-in closet surrounds an island counter and convenient bench seating.  Glistening marble is repeated on bath counters, wainscot and spa shower as a cool counterpoint to the vaulted ceilings in the suite, where time and tension disappear.

“Stone Acorn’s attention to detail and understanding of Southern architecture will bring our brand to life in this Showcase Home,” said Kristen Payne, Executive Marketing Director, Southern Living.   "I look forward to seeing the ideas and inspiration when this home opens for tours.”

In keeping with the ingenuity demanded of a Southern Living Showcase Home, Stone Acorn Builders incorporated as many green and sustainable elements as possible into design and construction.  The exterior is finished in James Hardie® Artisan siding. Reclaimed brick forms the skirt accent, walkways and driveway border, as well as the floors in porches, mudroom and pantry.  The concrete shake roof with copper finials and aluminum clad wood windows are also green features.   Environmentally preferred non-toxic zero-VOC Sherwin-Williams Paint and Stain were applied throughout the interior and exterior. The home is the first new construction in Houston to utilize the Lennox SunSource™ Home Energy System, which uses solar panels to energize the AC unit or provide green energy directly to the home when the AC unit is not in use.

Guests are invited to register for gift baskets and premiums to be given away each weekend.  The home will host the following special guests and demonstrations throughout the showcase:
